Shakers sign Scott.

With several Rovers youngsters being eyed up by clubs in the lower divisions over the course of the transfer window, Scott Wharton has become another of Rovers’ promising youngsters to depart Ewood Park temporarily, with League 2’s Bury being his destination for the rest of the current campaign.

The 21-year old centre-back, who agreed a new deal until 2021 over the summer, spent the second-half of last season and the first-half of the current campaign at Danny Cowley’s Lincoln City side, who currently occupy top spot in League 2. Despite featuring for the Imps in 14 league games last season, and 11 this season, Wharton – mainly due to the arrival of former Burnley defender Jason Shackell in the summer of 2018 – hasn’t been able to nail down a starting spot that his development craves.

Wharton’s lack of minutes in Lincolnshire consequently forced Tony Mowbray’s hand in recalling the defender, which has now allowed Scott to make the switch to the Greater Manchester side, who, ironically enough, are breathing down Lincoln City’s neck in the League 2 table, as they currently sit in 2nd.

After sealing a deal to Gigg Lane, the centre-back took some time out to speak to the Shakers’ media team, as he spoke of his joy at completing the move, in addition to what he knew about Bury already, having watched them as a Lincoln player earlier on in the year.

“I’ve had a couple of pre-seasons now in League 2, so I know what it’s all about. It’s a very physical, demanding league where the games come thick and fast and there’s barely any time to rest. Anyone can beat anyone in this division, so as a player, you have to be at your best in order to try and help your team get the result. I was very impressed with Bury when they came to Sincil Bank to play Lincoln, they played better than Lincoln on the night and probably felt unlucky not to win the game. Ultimately, however, I’m delighted to be here and I’m now looking forward to meeting the lads and cracking on from now until the end of the season.”
