Striking options Arm-ed-strong

Rovers have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Adam Armstrong, on loan from Newcastle United, until the end of the season.

The coveted forward, who will wear the number 18 for Rovers, started the season on loan at Bolton Wanderers in the Championship, which saw him deployed, predominantly as a left-winger, before being recalled by his parent club at the start of the window, after his loan deal at the Macron Stadium expired.

Armstrong, who has experience in League One and the Championship, was part of Tony Mowbray’s Coventry City squad, which finished 5 points off the League One playoffs in the 2015-16 season. Despite that, Armstrong’s season individually was a success as he notched up 20 goals and 5 assists in 40 games for the Sky Blues, which also earnt him a place in the League One PFA Team of the Year for that season.

In addition to working with Mowbray at Coventry and his spell at Bolton earlier on in the current campaign, the 20-year old has also had a loan spell at Barnsley. With his impressive performances out on loan, Armstrong earnt himself a call-up to England’s u-20s World Cup squad in 2017 – alongside fellow Rovers loanee Harry Chapman – which saw the striker score in England’s opening game as they went on to win the competition, meaning that despite only being 20, the striker has some strong international pedigree.

After penning the loan deal, the striker sat down with the clubs’ media team and straight away outlined that he was aiming for promotion during his temporary switch to the North West; “I’m delighted to here and I can’t wait for the challenge that lies ahead. I’ve come here to get as many goals as I can, work hard for the team and hopefully help them get promoted.”

Armstrong also discussed how much of a factor, Tony Mowbray, was in agreeing to sign for the club; “I’m looking forward to working with him and his backroom staff again. I’m looking forward to it and I can’t wait to get started. I know how good of a manager he is, so hopefully I can repay his faith in me.”
