Following the draw of the First Round of the Carabao Cup which took place in the afternoon of Thursday 24th June, Rovers were offered a home tie against newly-promoted Lancashire neighbours, Morecambe.
The clash with the newly-promoted side is set for the week commencing Monday 9th August, yet the date could potentially change due if both sides agree to play the game between 31st July and 4th August.
With this game being the first ever competitive meeting between the two sides, it will be an interesting encounter, given the upheaval that the Shrimpers suffered following their first ever promotion into League One, given their promotion-winning manager Derek Adams departed for Bradford City. It will be a wonder whether their momentum from promotion can be maintained.
As for Rovers, with no new faces in the door as of writing, and breathe being held regrading the submission of the club’s accounts and the fear another transfer embargo, the game seems to be a bit of a side-plot to the more pressing issues that both clubs are facing heading into 2021-22.
Despite this being scheduled as the first ever competitive meeting between the sides, the Lancashire duo do have history together, as they have faced each other three times in pre-season friendlies with the first being back in the 2005-06 season, before a 1-1 draw in 2011-12 and a 2-1 Rovers win in 2017-18.
As per the club website, a confirmed date and ticket details for the tie will be announced in due course.
