Rovers have bolstered their attacking options with the return of Newcastle United forward, Adam Armstrong on a 4-year deal.
The 21-year old agreed to make his stay at Ewood Park a permanent one, after enjoying a successful loan spell during the second-half of the 2017-18 season.
The forward, affectionately known as ‘Arma’ around the club, comes back to Ewood Park – this time donning the number 7 shirt – having netted 9 goals in 21 League 1 games last season, whilst also producing some sublime performances which go unnoticed, when looking at pure statistics.
The deal itself, reportedly, costs around £3m, with £1.75m of that fee being paid up-front, whilst the rest is dependent on various clauses written into the deal.
After being linked with the club all summer, this deal comes as a relief to the player, the management and the fans, with all parties desperate to secure a deal, over the course of the summer.
Speaking to the club’s media team, Armstrong spoke of his delight at being able to call himself a Blackburn Rovers player, for the next 4 years;
“It’s an amazing feeling and it was a no-brainer to come back. The move hasn’t quite sunk in yet, because I’ve been at Newcastle all my life, but having the choice of coming to Rovers made the decision a lot easier and I’m sure I’ll settle in, in no time.
“The boys have been pestering me ever since I left, asking when I was returning! Saying that, it’s nice to feel wanted and it’s the best move at the moment for both me, and my family. I felt that I needed to challenge myself away from Newcastle United, and I don’t think there’s a better club than Blackburn Rovers to achieve my goals at.
“Despite being disappointed to be leaving my boyhood club, I’m not going to worry about it because I’m at another great club. A club who showed great faith in me during my loan spell last season, so I’m now keen to knuckle down and try and repay the faith, as well as the transfer fee.
“Rovers weren’t the only team interested in me, but this was a massive decision for my career which I needed to get right and as soon as I heard of Rovers’ interest, I didn’t hesitate to agree a deal.”
Interestingly, Newcastle United and Rovers legend, Alan Shearer, was one of the first to congratulate the 21-year old on his move on Twitter, once the news became public. Here’s hoping that ‘Arma’ can continue the trend Shearer started, of Newcastle-born forwards succeeding at Ewood Park!
