As Rovers prepare for their return to the Championship, Tony Mowbray has wasted no time in tying down the key assets of his side, one of whom includes tough tackling midfielder, Richie Smallwood, who has committed his future to the club after a successful debut season.
The 27-year old fan favourite, who has been dubbed ‘The King of Ewood’ by fans, has extended his stay at Ewood Park by an extra 2-years, meaning Smallwood will reign over Blackburn until at least 2020.
During his debut season, the midfielder was able to command Rovers’ midfield alongside the likes of Corry Evans and Bradley Dack as the trio were vital in controlling the centre of Mowbray’s midfield as the Blues returned to the Championship at the first time of asking.
After confirmation of his new deal, Richie spoke of his delight at extending his stay at Rovers, to the clubs’ media team.
“It’s been a nice situation to be in, although it took longer than I would have liked, but I’m glad to have the contract signed. The decision was a no-brainer for me, I didn’t have to think twice about extending my contract. This whole season has been unbelievable, and everything has gone to plan, both personally and as a team. Ever since the start of the season, everyone has played their part, from the staff and the players, to the fans and we were delighted to have gotten the job done. This place has felt like home ever since I walked through the door last year, having known a couple of the lads and worked with the manager previously, so it was an easy place to settle into. Although the Championship is looking tough with the additions from the Premier League, we relish a challenge and will be looking to start the campaign off well at Ipswich Town.”
With another piece of his jigsaw tied down to a new contract, Tony Mowbray expressed his delight at Smallwood’s extension and spoke about what he was expecting from the midfielder next season.
“After the tireless work he put in last season, which saw him play in every game of the league, last season, I feel that a new deal is what he deserves after his impressive performances helped the team achieve their aims. After coming into the side on a free transfer, I’ve now been able to align him with the other players in the squad. The real test of his quality will come next season as he’ll be tested against higher quality opposition. The challenge he faces now, is stepping up to the mark and showing everyone he can deal with better quality players.”
