Following the departure of Blackburn born-and-bred winger, Connor Mahoney to AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer during the previous summer, the Professional Football Compensation Committee have finally reached an agreement on the compensation that the Cherries owe Rovers following the protracted negotiations.
With the 21-year old moving to Dean Court during the summer of 2017 following the expiry of his Rovers contract, both clubs have been in discussions regarding a fee for the player, as a result of Mahoney being under the age of 24. Despite lengthy negotiations, the sides were unable to reach an agreement which saw the case conclude in a tribunal on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018.
As it states on Rovers’ website, the committee decided on the following points in order to conclude the saga;
- ‘Bournemouth must pay Rovers an initial compensation fee of £425,000.’
- ‘In addition to the initial payment, Bournemouth are to pay a further sum of £100,000 on the player making 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 first-team appearances – a potential further payment of £500,000.’
- ‘The potential for international appearances has also been factored, with Bournemouth expected to pay £250,000 in the event that Mahoney makes a full senior appearance for England.’
- ‘Rovers will receive 20% of any profit made by Bournemouth, if the player is sold to another club at any point in the future.’
With the prolonged negotiations finally at an end, Rovers and Tony Mowbray will be able to move on, knowing that they have a guaranteed, £425,000 in their transfer kitty, with the prospect of the fee increasing to over £1million in the next few years, if Mahoney develops into the talent, he showed glimpses of at Ewood Park.
