Skipper Seals April’s Award.

Skipper Seals April’s Award.

Despite the season ending, the awards haven’t stopped for Rovers, as the skipper, Charlie Mulgrew has become the latest to be rewarded for his hard-work and skill throughout the season, after picking up the Bristol Street Motors, Player of the Month Award, for April.

The Scotland international, who has been a fixture within Tony Mowbray’s side this season, participated in all 7 of Rovers’ April fixtures, which included 2 goals and 3 clean sheets for the skipper, as he has finally been rewarded for his contributions, after previously being nominated for and subsequently missing out on the November award to on-loan teammate Marcus Antonsson.

Without Mulgrew, Rovers would have been significantly weakened, not just in the defensive department, but in the goals as well, as the defender’s 14-goal haul – a career best for Mulgrew – saw him finish 3rd in the club’s goalscoring rankings, after Bradley Dack’s 18 goals and Danny Graham’s 17 strikes. In addition to his goals over the season, the skipper has provided a voice in the dressing room and has been integral in Rovers’ immediate return, back to the Sky Bet Championship.

His turnout in April, saw him net against, Bristol Rovers and Doncaster Rovers, respectively which included the all-important goal against the latter, which secured Rovers’ promotion back to the second tier. Whilst his goals were helpful for Mowbray’s side, his nous for defending saw the skipper’s clean sheets come against Southend United, Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers, as he capped off a successful month.

Mulgrew’s solid performances throughout April, saw him fend off competition for the award from; Ben Amos of Charlton Athletic, Will Grigg and Michael Jacobs, both of Wigan Athletic, Theo Robinson of Southend United and Nathan Delfouneso of Blackpool.

Following a fan vote, which lasted for 7 days, Mulgrew was able to clinch the award, by a landslide, (results below), which capped off a fantastic personal season for the 32-year old.

Fans will be hoping that the skipper can take his fantastic form, including his prolific eye for goal, into next seasons’ Championship, in the hope that the Blues can have another successful campaign.
