Rovers have today confirmed that highly rated central defender, Scott Wharton has been loaned out to League 2 side, Lincoln City for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.
The 20-year old, who in September, signed a new contract which extended his stay at Rovers by three years, until the summer of 2020, has joined the Imps who have been in fine form this season. Lincoln currently find themselves 8th in League Two, one point off the playoffs following their promotion into the league last season after winning the Conference National.
The Blackburn-born defender, who has impressed Tony Mowbray during the manager’s time at the club, has been struggling with two separate ankle injuries since returning to pre-season and as a result, hasn’t been able to get the football required to further his development. Wharton temporarily departs Ewood Park after participating in 6 games for the first team, since making his debut for the club in August 2016 against Burton Albion in the Championship. The defender also scored his first goal for the Blues in his second game for the club in the EFL Cup as he started Rovers’ comeback in their 4-3 win over Crewe Alexandra.
With the Imps in such a strong position in the league, they will certainly be looking to Wharton to help them solidify their defence in order to help push themselves forward and potentially secure a playoff place in the 17 games they have remaining between now and the end of the season. Additionally, with Lincoln only conceding the 2nd least amount of goals in the league at 28, Wharton will be able to come into the side with confidence, and will be able to ease his way back into contention, following his injuries.
