After Rovers managed to salvage a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City which came courtesy of Adam Armstrong’s 20th and 21st league goals of the campaign, the striker reflected on the underwhelming afternoon, despite hitting 51 league goals in Rovers colours.
“Milestones always mean a lot. My job is to score goals and it’s something I’ve done well since I was little, so to get milestones like the one I achieved today, is brilliant. It means so much to score half-a-century of goals for this great club. It’s been quite a frustrating wait to get to this point because I’ve been dealing with an injury that kept me out for quite a few games, but like I said, I just needed to get back into the swing of things. Last week, I got back into the rhythm and today, I thought I played well. I felt much better today, than I did last week. I had a few opportunities last week, but things didn’t fall my way and I wasn’t really feeling up to speed, but to get 90 minutes today, is brilliant.
“I thought we played well as a team today, but our mistakes leading to their goals is what’s letting us down at the moment. I try to take every game as they come and create as many chances as possible for the team, but to put them away today was a nice feeling. I think a point was the least we deserved, because their goals mainly came from our mistakes. That’s what’s been happening with us over the past few months, we’ve been let down by our own mistakes and although we’ve tried to cut them out, that obviously didn’t happen today which was disappointing, but I think we got the least we deserved. The passage of play before their second goal kind of summed up our season, with them going back ahead so soon after we hit the post. We’ve had all the ball throughout the season and created chances without putting them away, but as I said before, we need to respect the point because this is a hard place to play football.
“We’ve dropped down the table in recent weeks and we all know that it hasn’t been good enough. No footballer wants to be down there, but this point can be looked at positively and we can use it as momentum to move onto Derby County next week. Every injured player will tell you how horrible it is to sit and watch your team play, because you just want to be involved and try to help. It was frustrating, but I got myself back fit and hopefully I can score a few more goals between now and the end of the season. You could say that beating my tally of 20 goals is one of my goals for the season ticked off, but I don’t really set objectives, before the season because it’s just puts pressure yourself. I just like to take every game as it comes and see how many goals I have by the end of the season.
“We have to remain positive going into the final few games of the season, even though we’ve fallen short of our expectations. We have to keep doing the right things, playing the right football and keep creating the chances. The minute we stop creating chances is where we need to look at ourselves, but I feel that, in recent weeks, we’ve been doing every right, but just lacked the finishing touch to put the chances away. Today, however, again wasn’t enough because you’d expect to win the game after scoring two away at Cardiff but conceding two sloppy goals hasn’t helped our cause. When you’re not playing well, things aren’t great, but we need to knuckle down and keep working hard every day, as we do and let’s hope that a massive end to this season will help kickstart next season.”
