Following on from the contract extension of Darragh Lenihan, Rovers have announced that Derrick Williams has followed suit and extended his Rovers contract.
The left-back’s current deal was set to expire at the end of next season, but this new contract sees him rewarded until 2021, following his impressive performances which saw Rovers bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
The 25-year old, who was able to cement his place as Rovers’ first choice left-back, following the arrival of Amari’i Bell in January, continued to show his consistency after only missing 1 of the 46 League 1 matches during the 2017-18 campaign.
With such a feat being achieved, Williams was also given the honour of his first cap for the Republic of Ireland alongside fellow Rover, Darragh Lenihan, who also achieved his first cap during the international break.
After Williams’ renewal was confirmed, Tony Mowbray spoke of his delight that the Irishman had agreed to extend his stay at the club.
“We’re happy that the deal has been done, even though it took longer than we would have liked, but overall, we’re delighted to have secured Derrick’s services for the next few years. From my perspective, Derrick is an important, stable part of our team who is capable of playing as both, a full-back and at centre-back if required to, additionally his physicality, speed and willingness to run up and down the flank is invaluable for us both going forwards and backwards. He’s an important part of the dressing room and I hope that his consistency can continue into next season.”
