Rovers have entered the FA Cup Fifth Round for second consecutive season to set up a tasty affair with a Premier League side, after coming from behind to beat Hollywood-backed, Wrexham AFC, by a 4-1 scoreline at Ewood Park on Monday evening.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side – who had to do things the hard way after conceding to Andy Cannon’s 19th minute strike – grew into the game and let their quality do the talking as a Sammie Szmodics brace was sandwiched either side of a Sam Gallagher finish, before a fine strike from Sondre Tronstad sent Rovers into the Round of 16.
The Blues, who will remain at Ewood Park in their next game in the competition, already knew coming into the tie that the winner would face Newcastle United, after the draw was conducted on Sunday afternoon, meaning Jon Dahl Tomasson will face a reunion with his former side, when the Toon travel to East Lancashire on the week commencing, Monday 26th February.
Before beating Wrexham, Rovers had to get the better of League One side, Cambridge City in the Third Round, who they also beat at Ewood Park by a hefty scoreline of 5-2, courtesy of a Sammie Szmodics hattrick, and two fine finishes from Arnór Sigurðsson and Harry Leonard to seal the rout.
Newcastle United have had a feisty time in the FA Cup, this far, as they had to overcome local rivals, Sunderland – who they beat 3-0 at the Stadium of Light – before dispatching fellow Premier League side, Fulham via a 2-0 scoreline, to make it this far. Eddie Howe’s side, who had a brief fling with UEFA Champions League football before Christmas, have not won the FA Cup in just under 70 years, since 1954-55, but will be eying up this current run as their only route towards silverware, this campaign.
Tickets information will be announced by Rovers, once a final date is fixed and any television duties are considered.
