Rovers have handed their support base an early Christmas present by announcing that highly-rated forward, Arnór Sigurðsson has made his stay at Ewood Park a permanent one, after initially joining on a season-long deal!
The Icelandic international, who had exercised his option to depart CSKA Moscow, despite being the Army Men’s club record signing, arrived in East Lancashire in the summer with a lot of potential and hype surrounding him and it is fair to say that he has not disappointed the fanbase with his performances since swapping the baltic conditions of Russia for the even colder environment of Blackburn(!)
Arriving at Rovers as a fully fledged international with his nation, the #7 showed his class immediately after netting on his debut in the eventual 4-3 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, after missing an initial portion of the campaign due to an injury he suffered on international duty prior to arriving in Britain. On five goals thus far for the campaign in all competitions, the forward who has affectionately been dubbed as ‘Siggy’ by the Rovers fans, will undoubtedly be putting expectations on himself to double that initial tally come the end of the campaign in an attempt to help Rovers maintain their respectable first-half of the season and build towards potentially earning a play-off spot come May.
Having experienced football, in the Nordic nations of home nation Iceland, and Sweden – with the former’s ÍA Akranes and the latter’s IFK Norrköping and IF Sylvia – as well as having brief stints in Russia with CSKA Moscow and Italy with Venezia, Sigurðsson will no doubt be aiming to make Blackburn a permanent home to allow his career to fully flourish in a settled environment and has already put in the fine foundations in order for the 24-year-old to reach his very high ceiling.
Upon announcing the deal, Rovers released a short montage of the Iceman’s highlights in Blue and White, which contained a voiceover of the attacker expressing his delight at putting pen-to-paper on a permanent stay at Ewood: “I’ve said it since day one, this has felt like home. Everyone has taken to me and welcomed me. I’m really happy and I’m enjoying the challenge in such a great country!”
Gregg Broughton was also quick to express his delight at the deal and extended his gratitude to all parties for helping getting the deal over the line: “We are really happy to make Arnór Sigurðsson a permanent signing at Blackburn Rovers and to have the next 18 months working with him. Arnór has displayed the technical quality that is central to his performance and he is now a vital part of our squad. Can we thank Magnus and Bjarki, his representatives, for their ongoing support in being able to make this deal happen as smoothly as possible.”
With his future now settled, the 30-cap Icelandic international will be looking forward to the rest of the season and beyond in Blue and White as he continues to make his mark on the Championship and in English football.
Til hamingju Arnór! ??
