After Rovers were battered 3-0 by Huddersfield Town as they again failed to win a game on Boxing Day, Jon Dahl Tomasson apologised to the fans for such a terrible display as he discussed the frustrating afternoon to RoversTV.
“Today’s performance and result were disappointing. We knew coming here to play against a team that are near the relegation zone, that we needed a strong performance, which we didn’t get. Today’s performance was our worst of the season, when you look at the quality of the squad. This season, we’ve been playing well and doing all of the right things, but today was not a good game and we’re extremely disappointed to lose, because we’ve brought 3,000 fans and they deserve so much better than that. I would like to apologise to our fans for today’s performance and result.
“Initially, there was nothing wrong with our performance, but conceding the first goal gave the Huddersfield Town players and fans a boost in confidence, yet we were then chasing the game. When you chase a game against a team who are defending well and you give the ball away unnecessarily, that gives them the opportunity to counter-attack which can lead to them scoring goals as we saw today. The good thing with football is that we have a busy programme and we now have an opportunity to turn things around in a few days away at Hull City. This group have shown great spirit this season and they’ll look to show it again on Friday.
“I’m extremely disappointed with the drop of quality in comparison to Saturday against Watford. I am responsible for the standard of our performances. There’s nothing that I can say caused today’s poor performance. We were unable to play through Huddersfield, very well and once you start chasing the game, they defend and counter very well. We didn’t hit our numbers and we were second best in every department today.
“It becomes an even harder game when they sit deep and defend their lead, especially when we were unable to play through their lines. We also gave away a lot of unnecessary balls, today. Our passing was not up to scratch which led to us being spread out. We must admit that Huddersfield were counter-attacking really well and taking advantage of our poor performance.
“We’re always disappointed when we concede goals and lose games, but the good thing is that we only have to wait until Friday to play. We’ve seen a lot of good performances this season, but today was our worst. We have to forget today and work extremely hard to improve against Hull City.”
