Rovers charged into the Third Round of the 2023-24 Carabao Cup following a record-breaking 8-0 win over Harrogate Town in the Second Round.
Rovers were ultimately always comfortable during their first ever competitive meeting against the Sulphurites, who had done well to reach the Second Round of the competition for the second time in their history after overcoming Carlisle United in Round One by a 1-0 scoreline.
The Third Round draw occurred live on Sky Sports, following Everton’s last-gasp away victory at Doncaster Rovers, as the 7 remaining Premier League sides who are involved in European competitions this season, entered the draw, alongside all of the Second Round victors from all 4 top divisions of the English footballing pyramid, meaning 32 balls were in the pot.
With the draw recombining the North and South of the country, Rovers – ball #30 in the draw – were offered a home tie against Cardiff City who reached this stage of the competition after beating Birmingham City, 3-1 in the Second Round last night and Colchester United on penalties in the First Round The clash is set to take place at Ewood Park on the week commencing 25th September, with a confirmed date to be set in the near future, along with ticket information.
Rovers and Cardiff City have previous in this competition with Cardiff winning the only League Cup meeting between the two sides, back in 2011, as the Bluebirds denied Rovers a chance to appear in a Semi Final, courtesy of goals from Kenny Miller and Filip Kiss which saw Cardiff emerge 2-0 victors. Whilst the teams have met numerous times over the years in the Championship, Rovers fans do hold the City of Cardiff close to their hearts, as the Blues won this very competition at the Millennium Stadium in 2002, beating Tottenham Hotspur, 2-1.
