Rovers narrowly scraped through into the second round of the 2019-20 Carabao Cup courtesy of a 3-2 home victory over League Two’s Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night, which saw Tony Mowbray’s men put in a less than satisfactory performance, despite advancing in the competition.
The second round draw took place live on Sky Sports and included the two remaining Championship sides – Cardiff City & Fulham – who directly advanced to the second round as they were the highest finishing teams from the Championship, as a result of being relegated in 18th and 19th in the 2018-19 Premier League, respectively.
With the draw being separated into teams from the North and the South of the country and despite it being unseeded, Rovers – ball #14 in the draw – were handed an away tie against newly promoted Premier League side, Sheffield United, who received a bye into this round, due to their promotion, the previous season. The clash is set to take place at Bramall Lane, on the week commencing August 26th, with a confirmed date to be set in the near future, along with ticket information.
Whilst Chris Wilder’s men have seen their incredible rise continue into the Premier League, the head-to-head record between the sides in recent years, does not make good reading for Rovers, with the Blues losing both games in last season’s Championship, 2-0 and 3-0, respectively. Although the Blues had to come from behind to get through into the next round, the Rovers fans will be hoping that this result will help kickstart their league season, and give them an opportunity to get through against, what will most likely be, a rotated Sheffield United side, due to them no doubt prioritising the Premier League.
