Following his impressive performances for Rovers throughout the 2018-19 Championship season, Lewis Travis has been rewarded for his development with a new four-year deal, through to 2023, with an option from the club to add an extra year.
The 21-year old Whiston-born midfielder, who bagged Rovers’ equaliser in Sunday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Rangers at Ibrox, initially signed from Liverpool’s youth academy in 2014, before breaking into the first-team picture during the 2017-18 season in League One which saw him sporadically feature for the first-team, alongside his commitment to the then-title winning under-23s side.
After shining in his limited performances for Tony Mowbray’s side, the versatile midfielder, who is more than capable of filling in at full-back, became a mainstay in the first-team picture during the recent 2018-19 Championship campaign, with 26 league appearances to his name, as his composure on the ball, vision and work-rate in the centre of midfield, propelled him into a starting role during the second-half of the campaign, which also saw him bag his first goal for the club, against Norwich City in the 2-1 defeat at Carrow Road, in April.
With the highly-rated midfielder signed and secured for Rovers, the media team wasted no time in gaining Travis’s reaction to his new deal;
“I’m delighted to have gotten the new deal, as I wanted my future to be secured before the season started, in order to concentrate on my football. The new deal means the world to me as this is the only football club I want to play for. There have been a lot of ups and downs since I arrived at 16, but the club kept faith in me and gave me a pathway to the first-team. I’d like to thank the gaffer and everyone at the club who has helped me get to this position, because, without them, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.
“Last season was massive for me, not only due to the jump from under-23s football to the competitive nature of the first-team, but because I believe I did well and took my chances when I was offered them by the gaffer. The competition for places that is now on the cards due to how the gaffer has strengthened the squad in midfield, makes me even more motivated and determined to work even harder and push myself to the maximum in order to keep my place in the first-team picture.
“For me, this season isn’t about showing the gaffer what I can do, because he already knows that. It’s about continuing from where I left off, last season, in order to help the team, get to where we all want to be. I’m always looking at my game to see how and where I can improve, and hopefully with the help of the great coaching staff here, I can push on and take my game to the next level, this season.”
