After beating MK Dons 4-1 on Saturday, Rovers’ captain Charlie Mulgrew spoke to the clubs’ media team about his two goals and the overall performance that Rovers put in to gain their second win of the season.
“We enjoyed the game and we always looked like winning it. As a defender, I’m disappointed to concede, but I’m delighted to score two goals and win the game. At first, we were finding our feet in the league and realising what it takes, and now we know what it takes (to win in this league).
“First and foremost it’s hard work and a battle, as we have to match teams in that department, then come out on top. We are delighted with the win, but we can’t get carried away as we have to move onto the next game and do the same again.”
The skipper also talked about how important the timing of each Rovers goal was as each goal came with its own significance for the Blues as they were able to assert their dominance right from the get-go after Derrick Williams opened the scoring inside 90 seconds.
“The first goal set the tone for everything that followed. We were disappointed to concede, but then we showed good attitude to come back and re-take the lead. The third goal obviously helped us as it gave us a two goal cushion and then the fourth sealed the match for us and the game becomes enjoyable after that. We’re all delighted but we’re turning our attentions and looking forward to the next match.
“I knew the second goal would be important and had Marcus (Antonsson) put his chance away to make it 2-0 at the time, it would have made things a bit easier but I’m just delighted that the free-kick went up and over the wall to put us in front. It’s kind of cliché but winning the game and going on a bit of a run is the most pleasing thing. I’m just as happy if someone else scores the goals and I keep the clean sheets. We knew the third goal would be important as it eased us up a little bit and we started to play with more freedom and eventually got a fourth which made the game really comfortable.”
Mulgrew also discussed how the win could potentially help the team create some momentum once the league action returned, following the international break.
“The confidence is there, but we’re not getting carried away, we move onto the next match again with tough games to come, tough games where we need to battle and work hard and out-fight teams in order to win, which we’re up for.”
