Rovers boss Tony Mowbray sat down with Rovers’ media department today to discuss his reaction to the defeat at Southend.
The 53 year old was quick to dismiss the Southend result as ‘a part of the nature of football’ as he detailed how difficult of a challenge League One is.
“You have to try and rebound and recover, as Sunday is a difficult day as is the drive back on the coach on the Saturday.”
The boss however, was quick to apologise and heap praise on the travelling fans that turned up in their numbers for Rovers’ first game back in the third tier since 1979-80.
“The supporters who travelled in their numbers will he hugely frustrated and disappointed as well, as expectation was high and we didn’t produce. It’s football, we can’t find stellar performances every week and we wanted to start really well as they (Southend) did.
“I always knew that Southend away was going to be very tough. I’ve been there a few times and it has a tight little pitch in a tight ground which makes it very difficult to play an open game, it became very scrappy with a lot of long balls and it was bit unlike how we would have played, yet we have to get used to it.”
Mowbray also stated that he let the players know what they’d be up against in League One as a result of them being one of the bigger scalps in the division.
“I’ve said to the players, ‘Welcome to League One’, nobody’s going to allow you to just pass the ball around and score goals at will, every game is going to be tough and we have to be ready to go and fight.
“It (the defeat to Southend) was an eye opener for us, we hope that, at home, we can make it a fortress and win lots of games as away from home we’re going to have to face a lot of games like that were teams are at their maximum as it is Blackburn Rovers coming to town with a big support.”
